Oil & Separator Change Guide for Atlas Copco GA VSD+ Compressors

Oil & Separator Change Guide for Atlas Copco GA VSD+ Compressors

Regular oil and separator maintenance are essential to keep your Atlas Copco GA VSD+ compressor running smoothly. Skipping these services can lead to overheating, reduced efficiency, and even costly airend failures.

Recommended Oil: Roto Xtend Duty Fluid

Your GA VSD+ is designed to run on high-performance synthetic lubricants. We recommend Roto Xtend Duty Fluid (2901170100), formulated for extended drain intervals and maximum thermal stability. It helps reduce internal wear, keep oil clean longer, and protect your investment.

When to Change the Oil and Separator

  • Oil: Typically every 4,000 to 8,000 hours depending on your environment and usage.
  • Air/oil separator: Usually every 4,000 hours or as recommended by your service alerts.

Always check your Elektronikon controller for service interval reminders and adjust if operating in harsh or high-temperature conditions.

Step-by-Step Oil Change Process

Before changing oil, consider taking a sample to monitor your compressor’s health. Check out our Six Steps to Take an Oil Sample blog or watch this quick video guide to learn how.

1. Shut Down and Depressurize

Turn off the compressor, lock out power, and fully depressurize the system before starting.

2. Drain the Old Oil

Open the drain valve on the oil circuit and let the oil completely drain into a suitable container. Dispose of used oil according to local environmental regulations.

3. Replace the Oil Filter

Remove the old oil filter and install a new one. Lightly lubricate the gasket on the new filter before installing to ensure a proper seal.

4. Refill with Roto Xtend Duty Fluid

Refill the system with Roto Xtend Duty Fluid. Fill to the proper level as indicated in your manual or sight glass.

Replacing the Air/Oil Separator

  • Access the separator housing and carefully remove the old separator element.
  • Clean the housing surfaces and install the new separator element, making sure all gaskets and O-rings are properly seated.
  • Reassemble and tighten bolts evenly to avoid leaks.

Benefits of Staying on Schedule

  • Reduced risk of unexpected shutdowns
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Longer airend and component life
  • Lower long-term maintenance costs
