Oil & Separator Change Guide for Atlas Copco GX Compressors

Oil & Separator Change Guide for Atlas Copco GX Compressors

Your Atlas Copco GX compressor (including the GX 30) is built for reliable performance, but like any rotary screw machine, it depends on clean oil and a healthy separator to run at its best. Regular oil and separator changes help protect the airend, reduce wear, and prevent costly downtime.

Recommended Oil: Roto-Inject Fluid

Atlas Copco GX compressors are designed to run on high-quality synthetic oils like Roto-Inject Fluid. This oil ensures optimal lubrication, cooling, and sealing inside the airend, especially under continuous or heavy-duty use.

When to Change Oil and Separator

  • Oil: Every 4,000 to 8,000 hours, depending on operating conditions and ambient environment. Dirtier or hotter environments may require shorter intervals.
  • Air/oil separator: Typically every 4,000 hours or during major service events. Always check your manual and follow any Elektronikon service reminders.

Take an Oil Sample First

Before changing oil, consider taking a sample to check the internal health of your compressor. Learn how in our Six Steps to Take an Oil Sample blog or watch this quick video guide.

Step-by-Step Oil Change Process

1. Shut Down and Depressurize

Turn off and lock out the compressor. Fully depressurize the system to ensure a safe oil change.

2. Drain Old Oil

Open the drain valve on the oil circuit and let all oil flow out into a suitable container. Dispose of used oil according to local environmental regulations.

3. Replace the Oil Filter

Remove the old oil filter and install a new one. Lubricate the gasket lightly to ensure a proper seal.

4. Refill with Fresh Roto-Inject Fluid

Fill the compressor with Roto-Inject Fluid to the correct level (check sight glass or manual specifications). Avoid overfilling, which can cause foaming or overheating.

Replacing the Air/Oil Separator

  • Open the separator housing and carefully remove the old element.
  • Clean mating surfaces and install the new separator element with all necessary gaskets and O-rings.
  • Reassemble and tighten bolts evenly to avoid leaks.

Why This Matters

  • Protects your airend from premature wear and damage
  • Maintains energy efficiency and reduces operating costs
  • Prevents unexpected shutdowns and production interruptions
