Miracle Mile: The Story of the 8-Minute Man
Sometimes You've Just Gotta Race.
What started as a lunchtime conversation as we watched the Olympics and remembered what kind of shape we “used to be in,” a debate bubbled up. The conversation began with a ripple and ended with a tidal wave.
On Your Mark...
The original question had more to do with whether you would hypothetically accept $1 Million or try your luck for $10 Million by running a sub-8 minute mile. Most answers were accepted but only one was hotly debated. The debate? Whether Eddie Bolchoz could run a sub-8 minute mile.
After the conversation festered long enough, into its third day, our Marketing and Training teams couldn’t take it anymore. The excitement to do something grand became overwhelming.
An initial video was shot for social media, informing those in the viewing audience of what was happening. Since the discussion had already made its way around ACS, we interviewed people across our five Greenville, SC-based offices.
Getting Set...
The next thing you know, we're ordering cow bells, pom-poms, a finish line ribbon, an American flag and a crown. We had a discussion about whether we could do a "peaceful dove release," but we found that doves were a little hard to come by this time of year. Someone mentioned purchasing a bunch of parakeets so we could release those, but there were some concerns about whether those would survive in the wild. We settled on helium-inflated dove-shaped balloons.
...GO!
Race day finally arrived. The air was thick with anticipation. A lot of us had family members and friends texting us their bet. The amount of people invested in this had multiplied, as we had 5,000+ initial views on our series of posts.
