Is Your Compressor Making a Sound? Let's Get to the Bottom of It!
Loud, unexplained noises coming from an air compressor is cause for concern. On a day to day basis, a compressor is going to make usual noises. The friction between moving metal parts will cause this. However, when an air compressor starts making unusual noises, there is a reason and it needs to be fixed.
Ticking, Rattling, Clicking, or Rumbling
This could be caused by loose hardware. Loose pulleys, flywheels, belt guards, clamps, or accessories could need tightening. A compressor will have hardware come loose. The constant vibrations cause parts to eventually loosen and then make noise. This is an easy fix for your compressor.
In a reciprocating compressor, the pistons could be hitting the valve plate. Remove the compressor cylinder head and inspect for foreign matter on top of the piston. Add a new gasket and assemble the head.
Hissing or Screaming
This is indicative of extremely high pressure. This is a dangerous issue and should be taken care of by an experienced service technician as soon as possible.
Humming
Humming indicates that the compressor is low on oil, has a failed starting capacitor, or a seized up motor. If adding oil to the compressor does not help the humming, the other two options should be explored by a service technician.
Grinding
Reciprocating compressors have pistons that work inside the compressor to compress air. If the pistons are grinding, this is something a service technician needs to check out.
Knocking
The compressor floor mounting may be loose. The bolts may need to be tightened on the mounting. You may also want to replace the vibration pads that help muffle noises.
There could be a variety of different reasons why your compressor is making noise. This article is a starting place for troubleshooting and understanding common noises and their origins. As always, follow safety precautions and allow a professional to troubleshoot your air compressor.
