Cold Weather Tips for Your Ingersoll Rand SS3 & SS5 Compressor

Cold Weather Tips for Your Ingersoll Rand SS3 & SS5 Compressor

Cold weather can be tough on any air compressor, especially reciprocating units like the Ingersoll Rand SS3 and SS5. If you’re running your compressor in cold or freezing conditions, following a few simple steps can help you avoid major headaches (and repairs).

Use the Right Oil

In colder environments, using an oil formulated for wide temperature ranges is critical. We recommend All Season Select synthetic lubricant. It flows better in low temps and offers excellent startup protection, reducing wear on bearings and cylinders.

Warm Up Before Heavy Use

If your compressor is stored in a cold space, allow it to run unloaded for a few minutes before putting it under a full load. This gives oil a chance to circulate and warm up internal parts evenly.

Drain the Tank Regularly

Cold air can lead to increased condensate buildup. Always drain the receiver tank daily (or more often) to avoid internal rust and ice formation that could block valves or lines.

Check for Moisture in Lines

Any moisture left in hoses or tools can freeze overnight, leading to blockages or tool damage. After each use, disconnect and blow out lines when possible.

Store Indoors When Possible

If practical, keep your SS3 or SS5 in a heated or temperature-controlled space. Extreme temperature swings can cause seals and gaskets to deteriorate faster.

Protect Your Compressor All Winter Long

With the right preparation, your SS3 or SS5 can handle winter work just as reliably as it does in the summer. A few extra minutes of care can save you from costly repairs and downtime.
