How to Change a Primary and Secondary Air Filter on a Rotary Screw Compressor

Here's How to Change a Primary and Secondary Air Filter on a Rotary Screw Compressor

When it comes to keeping your rotary screw compressor running at peak performance, few things matter more than clean air. That’s where your primary and secondary air filters come in. They’re the first line of defense against dust, debris, and other contaminants that can shorten the life of your machine and its oil.

In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through how to safely and correctly replace both filters. Whether you're doing routine maintenance or troubleshooting performance issues, this is a critical task to keep your compressor running clean and efficient.

Safety First

Before you get started, make sure you're wearing the proper personal protective equipment. Safety is the foundation of every maintenance procedure.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Lockout/Tagout mechanism
  • New primary air filter
  • New secondary air filter

Step 1: Lockout/Tagout the Compressor

Before touching anything inside your compressor, engage the lockout/tagout process.

  • Only a qualified technician should perform this work.
  • When locking out the handle, use your right hand and turn your body away to the left.
  • Double-check that the panel is securely locked and the air system is isolated.
  • Try to power up the unit and verify on the control panel that power is disconnected.

Step 2: Remove the Old Filters

Remove the Cover Panel

  • Unscrew the wingnut holding the cover panel in place.
  • Remove the wingnut and panel and set them aside.

Remove the Primary Air Filter

  • Use your wrench to loosen the bolt holding the filter.
  • Remove the bolt, washer, and old filter.

Remove the Secondary Air Filter

  • Loosen and remove the bolt and washer, then take out the secondary filter.

Step 3: Install the New Filters

Start with the Secondary Filter

  • Slide the new secondary filter onto the threaded rod. Be mindful that the threaded rod pokes through the end of the filter.
  • Add the washer and hand-tighten the bolt, then finish with a wrench.

Add the Primary Filter

  • Slide the new primary filter over the secondary filter.
  • Ensure the threaded rod is visible, then add the washer and bolt.
  • Hand-tighten and finish with your wrench.

Reinstall the Cover Panel

  • Replace the cover panel over the cylinder.
  • Add the washer and wingnut, and hand-tighten into place.

Step 4: Power the Unit Back On

Once the new filters are installed, it’s time to power the compressor back up:

  • Remove the lockout/tagout mechanism safely, turning away from the panel.
  • Slowly reopen the air supply valve.

That’s It!

You've just completed a key part of your compressor’s preventative maintenance plan. Clean filters mean longer equipment life, better air quality, and a more efficient system.
